about

A very limited 7” of minimal synth background tracks designed for a series of NFT avatars in 2021.
Ian Button’s Papernut Cambridge project has had forays into the world of instrumental, library and media music in the past - one of PCs most successful releases was an album of Mellotron based instrumentals made for the Ravenwood Music library in 2017.
In 2021 Button was asked to create some loopable background pieces for a series of NFT avatars at www.osuvox.io. The avatars were designed by Osuvox founder Alex Templeton-Ward, who also did the artwork for the first Papernut album in 2013. Button created a dozen or so minimal, discrete electronic pieces to accompany the avatar images on the Osuvox website.
The Osuvox team also cheekily flipped Button himself into an avatar named VOLLn8 - a spaceborne collector of interplanetary sonic tech, with a back-story that VOLLn8 created the music after intercepting the Voyager spacecraft and finding the golden record on board.
The tracks are now available as an edited montage on a very limited lathe-cut 7”. The record is an edition of 50, on clear vinyl with no defined A or B side or rpm - it can be played at 45 or 33rpm (5mins or 7mins per side). It’s housed in a clear PVC sleeve with a printed label featuring the VOLLn8 avatar and numbered 1-50.

“VOLLn8 exists in space, maybe 45-50 light years from our solar system. It collects tech from different civilisations - particularly related to sound and electronics. The limitations of light speed mean that VOLLn8 is only aware of Earth tech up to the mid 1970s. At some point VOLLn8 was able to intercept the Voyager spacecraft and recover the golden phonograph record on board - VOLLn8 has replied using the same format.” - NASA
